Do garden planters need drainage?

Hi. We have bought and lined a large planter with a waterproof  membrane. Do we pierce holes in the bottom or rely on bulk drainage medium? Thanks for any advice

Hi @cesca

This is a question I get asked a lot during my gardening talks and public speaking events.

The quick answer is Yes! All plants in containers and pots need drainage. So pierce your liber. In multiple locations to make sure that excess water can drain out.

Let’s take a quick look at why all nearly plants in containers or the ground need drainage. (Exceptions being aquatic and certain bog plants)

Plants need drainage for several reasons:

1. Oxygen Supply: Drainage ensures that excess water doesn't saturate the soil, allowing the plant roots to access oxygen. Roots need oxygen for respiration, and waterlogged soil can suffocate them.

2. Prevents Root Rot: Poorly drained soil can lead to root rot, a fungal disease that can damage or kill plant roots. Adequate drainage helps prevent this issue.

3. Nutrient Uptake: Proper drainage helps maintain a balance of nutrients in the soil. Waterlogged soil can wash away essential nutrients, making them unavailable to plants.

4. Disease Prevention: Well-drained soil reduces the likelihood of soil-borne diseases by creating an environment less favorable for pathogens.

5. Aeration: Good drainage promotes soil aeration, which encourages beneficial soil organisms and root growth.

In summary, drainage is crucial for maintaining a healthy growing environment for plants, preventing root problems, and ensuring they can access the oxygen and nutrients they need to thrive so make sure that all your containers for plants have drainage!

Its also worth while learning a bit more about soil to help you work out what kind of growing media or soil conditions your plants need!

Happy gardening
