Totally new to gardening and need help.

Afternoon everyone,

As the title suggests I am completely new to gardening and have only ever really cut grass and that's as far as my experience goes.

I have a small back garden that I have essentially maintained to the bare minimum as I do not know what I am doing, and it is not my house as I am in the military and move alot so didn't feel it worthy putting alot of effort in to hand back in a year or so.

However it's sunny and I've decided to start trying to do just little bits to it to make it more respectable. I have two main things I would like help with to begin.

1) my grass has just been cut however as you can see in one of the attachments it's patchy and dry in places. I want to improve the quality and colour.

2) I have a corner of hard, dead ground that would be great as a place to plant flowers with a border round it. How would I even start making this ground ready for plants.

Any tips, products or help would be great so I can start this straight away.

Many thanks in advance

Hi @hudson88

Thanks for your question. You've come to the right place for absolute beginner gardener help!

I'm afraid your images did not upload, so if you can readd them then that would be helpful.

You could consider container gardening for the ease of moving around, but I'd still advise you to put in at least one flower bed maybe. That way, future tenants can enjoy the fruits of your labour, and it's better for wildlife.

In terms of compacted difficult ground please watch my video below for how to improve it or consider building raised beds so you can bring in your own soil to plant in. Below are a few of my ultimate beginner guides to help get you started.

All the best
