what to put in plant pots

Hello i bought a peach tree which came in a 5l container. I decided to put it in a bigger container and then outside. In the bigger container i put 25l top soil and then on top of that i put 18 l compost. There is still a lot of space to fill in the container and i want to fill it to make sure that the tree is securely planted. What should i fill the rest of the container with ? should i put more compost, more top soil or maybe stones  ?

Many Thanks

Hello Hi2u,

I can visualise what your trying to achieve, a nice underplanted tree, but I think you have gone a tad to large container wise, this of course dependent on your trees size?

You have added another 43L of compost and top soil, with possible room for more? there is no need for top soil, planting in a container I suggest a propriety "Container" compost which has added nutrients, or ordinary compost and a slow release fertiliser.

If you get a too larger container, your going to require extra compost to fill it, and extra water to keep the root ball and extra compost moist, which could cause the roots to get waterlogged

I would suggest going for a container just a couple of sizes up, maximum. Just because the roots may have extra space around them, they will not grow into this space any quicker.

A few more details would be good regarding the tree, a sapling, small medium height, I hope the above info will assist, let us know how you get on.

Bob
